S 291
A.D. 842. Æthelwulf, king of the South Peoples, to Ceolmund, his præfectus; grant of 1 sulung (aratrum) and a viculus near Rochester. Latin.
Archive: Rochester
MSS: Maidstone, Kent Archives Office, DRb/Ar2 (Liber Temporalium), 4r (s. xiv)
Printed: Thorpe, Reg. Roff., p. 23, claims to print from autograph at Rochester but his text is apparently from the Liber Temporalium; K 254 ex Thorpe; B 439 ex Thorpe; Campbell, Rochester, no. 21.
Comments: Deanesly 1927, p. 4 n. 3; Campbell, Rochester, pp. xxiii-iv, no obvious technical faults, p. 24 n. 1, on royal style; Whitelock, EHD, p. 370, Thorpe used Liber Temporalium.
Notes: In Campbell's edition the witness-list is printed incorrectly. The subscriptions seem originally to have been arranged in four columns, and these have been read horizontally instead of vertically (cf. B 439).
Rubric: De terra in Roffa .
